The Enneagram
A tool that can help us experience God’s deep love.
You may have heard of the Enneagram, or seen the symbol, and not known what to make of it. I know I had questions when I first learned about it!
But since then I’ve discovered what a powerful tool it is for our spiritual lives.
Essentially, the Enneagram describes our spiritual journey:
God is Love.
God created us in God’s image.
Because of pain or trauma, we lost sight of God and God’s image within us.
This was disorienting, and so we compensated by developing coping mechanisms.
Over time, these coping strategies developed into our personality patterns, which we identified with.
When we learn to recognize our personality patterns, we can begin to detach from them.
In doing so, we rediscover who we are and Whose we are.
And we experience God’s deep love.

As a spiritual director, I use the Enneagram daily with my clients. My favorite thing about it is that it invites us to see ourselves as God sees us: with deep love and compassion. It’s also an invaluable tool that helps us recognize and release habits that no longer serve us; identify spiritual practices that work for us; and reconnect with the God who created us.
